Emergency Agencies Participate In Mock Drill

August 25, 2006

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Department participated in a multi-agency disaster drill Friday morning at about 0800 hours. The Local Emergency Preparedness Committee organized an emergency preparedness drill for all emergency agencies to respond to. Those agencies participating in the drill were Wayne County Homeland Security, Wayne County Emergency Operations Center 911 Dispatchers, Wayne General Hospital, Wayne County Fire Department, Daryl McDonald’s Allied Health Class of the Wayne County Vo-Tec, Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, Mississippi Department of Transportation, Wayne County Board Of Education, Beat Four School Staff, Wayne County District Four, Wayne County Patrol, Waynesboro Fire Chief, Dixie Electric Power Company, Wayne County Maintenance, & Dixie Pipe Line Group.

The drill was placed into motion with Director of Homeland Security Arthur Lee Nored calling 911 and reporting that a backhoe had accidently dug into and ruptured a pipeline about nine miles West of Waynesboro. Emergency Operation Center Dispatchers dispatched the necessary emergency responders and notified the pipeline company. Emergency Responders arrived on scene to find that the pipeline was releasing a gas cloud and was burning. Numerous casualties were found that required rescuing and transporting to Wayne General Hospital. Sheriff’s Department Personnel assisted with traffic control. A simulated evacuation of the students at Beat Four School was also performed. The students in the Allied Health Class of the Wayne County Vo-Tec staged themselves at the mock scene and gave the emergency responders real life victims. “These students put their heart into being a realistic victim. They did a very good job”, said Nored.
