On Tuesday, August 3rd 2010, The Wayne County Sheriff’s Department arrested and charged Sammy Wayne Pitts with failure to comply with the sex offender registration laws. The arrest stems from Sheriff Stein Farrior receiving calls from several people in the Beat Four community reporting that Pitts had been spotted coming and going from the woods near the Beat Four Shubuta Road and the Fred West Road intersection. People were also calling and reporting that Pitts was no longer living at the location Pitts listed on his registration. Pitts also failed to re-register every 90 days as required under the sex offender laws.
Investigators Mike Mozingo and Kevin Stevens located and arrested Pitts at a residence located on the Old Exxon Road Tuesday morning. Investigators Mozingo and Stevens located a make shift campsite in the woods near the Beat Four Shubuta Road and the Fred West Road intersection that Pitts had been living.
Pitts was charged with failure to comply with the sex offender registration law which is a felony and carries a maximum of 5 years if convicted. Wayne County Justice Court Judge Charles Britton Sr. set Pitts’ bond at $25,000.00. Investigator Stevens will present the case to the January 2011 Grand Jury.
